Half a million boys killed and hospitalised by tribal circumcision

Research published by the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL) claims that more than 500,000 boys have ended up in hospital since 2008 after being subjected to traditional circumcision practices.

The South African media has also revealed that circumcision has killed more than 500 boys in the Eastern Cape region of the country in the past eight years, with the toll reaching 528 last month.

Traditional circumcision is seen as a rite of passage into manhood in some tribal communities. Boys face huge social and cultural pressure to take part in these dangerous rituals and males who haven’t been circumcised are not considered to be real men and face being ridiculed and ostracised.


Circumcision schools have become death traps
In the Eastern Cape of South Africa, boys attend initiation schools where they spend several weeks in the mountains during the circumcision season. “The initiation schools are seen by many as death traps for young people,” said the Reverend Dr Wesley Mabuza, Chair of CRL’s Rights Commission. “The South African society is being confronted with issues that force it to re-examine its ways of doing things”.

South Africa isn’t the only country where traditional circumcision practices are increasingly being recognised as a social problem. In Kenya, men from tribes who don’t practice circumcision are chased and rounded up by members of the Bukusu tribe and forcibly circumcised. Elsewhere, in Australia, the safety of ritual circumcision became a topic of public debate when three boys were airlifted to hospital after being injured in an aboriginal initiation ceremony.

The social and cultural acceptance of male circumcision as a legitimate practice places boys in African families all over the world at risk. High profile incidents of African boys being subjected to forced circumcision in the UK include Goodluck Caubergs who died aged just 27 days old after being circumcised by a midwife and Angelo Ofori-Mintah who died aged 28 days old after being circumcised by a Rabbi. Last month we also reported the story of a trainee doctor who divorced her African-born husband after he had their son circumcised without her consent or knowledge.

Those campaigning against male circumcision in South Africa, like the group NOCIRC-SA are currently in a minority. Groups like CRL are not opposed to the ritual, but are focussed on reducing the obvious risks.

CRL Chairperson, Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva said: “We cannot have mothers lose their boys up there and be told only when the other boys come back. At this rate [the practice] is going to die of natural causes because….people are scared of taking their kids to initiation schools.”

La struttura è la prima del suo genere nel Lazio ed è stata attivata per evitare il ricorso a presìdi clandestini pericolosi per la salute

Negli scorsi giorni a Civitavecchia è stato inaugurato il primo ambulatorio pubblico del Lazio dedicato all’effettuazione della circoncisione rituale. La struttura si rivolge, almeno per il momento, alla popolazione maggiorenne di religione ebraica o mussulmana. Le prestazioni vengono erogate in regime di intramoenia prenotando la visita attraverso il tradizionale Cup regionale.

“Questo un altro importante tassello dell’apertura culturale – ha dichiarato Giuseppe Quintavalle, direttore generale dell’Asl Roma F che il nostro personale ha intrapreso da oltre un decennio, con l’avvio operativo dei primi ambulatori distrettuali multiculturali in collaborazione con l’Amsi (Associazione Medici Stranieri in Italia). Questa ultima iniziativa, caldeggiata dai cittadini espressione di varie componenti etniche presenti sul nostro territorio, sancisce il diritto ad effettuare anche questo genere di prestazioni presso una struttura sanitaria pubblica, in piena sicurezza ed evitando tutte le possibili complicanze da interventi chirurgici effettuati in clandestinità senza misure igieniche e sanitarie adeguate”.

Un traguardo, quindi, che è stato possibile raggiungere grazie alla collaborazione prestata da tutte le persone, associazioni o strutture coinvolte nel problema. “Si tratta – ha spiegato Foad Aodi presidente dell’Amsi (Associazione medici stranieri in Italia), di Co-mai (comunità del mondo arabo in Italia) e fondatore di Uniti per unire – del primo presidio a offrire un servizio di questo tipo. Siamo arrivati a questo traguardo dopo cinque anni di richieste e tentativi di accordo ma siamo particolarmente soddisfatti perché da ora in poi sarà possibile evitare che le persone si rivolgano ad ambulatori clandestini che, oltre a chiedere cifre esorbitanti per effettuare la circoncisione anche più di 1000 euro, praticano l’operazione in condizioni igieniche non controllate né controllabili dalle autorità sanitarie ufficiali".

La necessità di una struttura pubblica di questo tipo è giustificata, infatti, anche da motivi di precauzione. "Calcoliamo - aggiunto Aodi - che almeno il 30 per cento delle circoncisioni che viene effettuato ogni anno avvenga senza nessuna garanzia di sicurezza. Siamo contenti anche del clima di collaborazione tra culture diverse che ha caratterizzato la fase preperatoria all'apertura dell'ambulatorio e che ha visto la collaborazione di arabi ed ebrei all'insegna della concordia. Nel prossimo futuro speriamo di poter avviare un’attività simile anche presso l’ospedale San Camillo-Forlanini di Roma ma che venga dedicato alla circoncisione dei bambini”.


La procedura prevede queste tappe:

Primo contatto:◾ Presso gli sportelli CUP dell’Ospedale “San Paolo” di Civitavecchia in Largo Donatori del Sangue, 1 – Tel. 0766.591546, per un appuntamento per visita “Circoncisione Rituale Maschile”.


Giorno della visita chirurgica:
◾ Regolarizzazione amministrativa della prestazione di che trattasi presso la Cassa CUP con pagamento della tariffa omnicomprensiva (visita chirurgica ed atto operatorio), concordata con le Comunità, a totale carico del cittadino pari ad € 213,00;
◾ Richiesta, se necessario, di eventuali esami diagnostici direttamente dal chirurgo che effettua la visita;
◾Consegna del consenso informato, tradotto, che sarà riconsegnato firmato per accettazione il giorno dell’intervento
◾ Appuntamento per l’atto operatorio (di pomeriggio o di sabato mattina).


Giorno dell’atto operatorio:
◾ Esibizione della ricevuta di pagamento effettuato prima della visita chirurgica;

Morti dopo essere stati sottoposti alla circoncisione rituale. Le vittime sono 27, ragazzi tra i 13 i 21 anni. E' successo in Sudafrica, e adesso il presidente sudafricano Jacob Zuma ha chiesto alla polizia di fare chiarezza sull'accaduto. Decessi che secondo i guaritori tradizionali sarebbero avvenuti per negligenza. Il colonnello della polizia, Leonard Hlathi ha precisato che sono state aperte delle inchieste per omicidio, ma fino ad ora non c'è stato alcun arresto nè capo di accusa.

«NEGLIGENZE» - «Abbiamo avuto 27 morti», ha proseguito la stessa fonte aggiornando il bilancio che in precedenza era fermo a 23, dopo la morte di quattro altri ragazzi nella provincia di Mpumalanga. Le vittime avevano tutte tra i 13 e i 21 anni e hanno tutte perso la vita nelle «scuole di iniziazione» nella stessa provincia del nord-est del Paese. «Abbiamo la prova che ci sono state delle negligenze», ha aggiunto da parte sua Kgoshi Mathiblea Mokoena, capofila dei leader tradizionali della zona. I riti di iniziazione, tipici delle etnie Xhosas, Sothos e Ndebeles, hanno causato centinaia di morti negli ultimi anni in Sudafrica, malgrado gli sforzi delle autorità di cercare di inculcare fondamentali regole di igiene ai guaritori tradizionali.

L'INIZIAZIONE - «Salutiamo l'azione della polizia - ha detto Zuma -, ma chiediamo che sia fatta giustizia e che i responsabili delle morti siano portati davanti ai tribunali». Oltre alla circoncisione, l'iniziazione prevede che i giovani trascorrano diverse settimane nella foresta per insegnare loro i valori del coraggio e della disciplina.

Brayden Tyler Frazier, an 11-day-old infant, died tonight at UC Davis Children's Hospital in Sacramento, California.
He had been diagnosed with hemophilia following his circumcision which resulted in seizures and later a coma.
Details have been coming to light as a result of the Facebook posts of various family and friends.

It has all happened before.

And, until the non-therapeautic circumcision of infants is banned, it will all happen again.

But this time, it happened in Sacramento, California.

Within the last hour, Brayden Tyler Frazier died after circumcision put him in critical condition.


He started bleeding uncontrollably after he was circumcised Wednesday at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.


They tried to use coagulants, platelets, plasma etc. to try and save his life, but to no avail.


His body started having seizures because of it, which lead to his liver and kidneys starting to shows signs of failure.


He was 9 days old when he was circumcised, and he died at 11 days of age.


He was alive and well for 9 days until the day he was circumcised, and it was found that he had hemophilia.


His parents are now grieving at the Lodi Memorial Hospital.


As a Californian who was born and raised in this area, this is very, very close to home for me.


What will happen now?


Here's what will happen.


Just like all circumcision deaths, this one will be swept neatly underneath the rug.


The cause of death will be recorded as "hemorrhaging to death."


Hemophilia will be blamed.

The baby will have died of "organ failure."

No mention is going to be made of his circumcision.

Ever.


Nobody is going to ask why doctors didn't test the child for hemophilia prior.


Everyone will demand nobody bother the parents because they are grieving.


They will not press charges.


They will be complicit in covering up this circumcision, and protecting the doctor that did it.


They may have yet another child, and go on to circumcise him too.


People will keep quiet, and demand others do too.


And so it will continue.


One conservative estimate says that 117 deaths a year happen in the US as a result of circumcision.


Although, a recent study in Brasil suggests that rate is closer to 156 deaths a year.


Because circumcision is performed in healthy, non-consenting children without any medical or clinical indication whatsoever, how is anything above 0 conscionable?


Death is a risk of circumcision.


Were these parents not made aware of this risk?


Do the benefits truly "outweigh" it, as the AAP repeats over and over?

Or was this child's death not important "because he was going to die anyway?"


I hate having to write these.

E Cape gets cash boost to curb initiation deaths

In July 2012, initiate deaths rocketed to the alarming figure of 42 in the Eastern Cape (SABC)

Government has allocated R20 million to the Eastern Cape Health Department to curb the deaths of initiates and ensure safe circumcisions. Seventeen boys have died due to botched circumcisions since the start of the circumcision season.

Eastern Cape Health and officials from Pretoria met in Bhisho to discuss strategies to tackle circumcision-related deaths in the province.

Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo says: "The discussions were held in Bhisho and it transpired that the department is allocated R20 million to deal with circumcision and ensure safe circumcision in the Eastern Cape."

In July 2012, initiate deaths rocketed to the alarming figure of 42 in the Eastern Cape while other provinces like Limpopo and Free State had much lower figures of four and five respectively. [Cold comfort to their families.]

More than 300 initiates were admitted to hospitals across the Eastern Cape this season due to botched circumcisions or complications resulting from failure to carry out medical check-ups before going to the bush. [It is unclear how prior checkups prevent botched circumcisions.]
In South Africa, traditionally performed circumcision is still largely influenced by culture as [o]pposed to Western circumcision at a hospital. [Actually, Western circumcision at a hospital is largely influenced by culture - our culture.] It is performed routinely on boys from infancy to adolescence to initiate them into manhood. Although other South African ethnic groups practice the ritual, it is mostly associated with the Xhosa culture. According to the history of the Xhosa people, one has to be circumcised to be considered a "man".

Circumcision is performed by traditional "teachers" or "principals" who run the initiation school, often in the bush where boys spend two or more weeks undergoing all the rituals. However there have been reports that no anesthetic is used, therefore hygiene becomes crucial.

The leaders performing the procedure use "razors" or knives that are reportedly not sterilised and can be used to circumcise the entire group of initiates. [- greatly increasing the risk of HIV transmission.]

Officials from the national department of health will meet with local leaders and officials on Friday to discuss the deaths of young boys after circumcision.

The department will meet with the Eastern Cape MEC for health Sicelo Gqobana, the Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders and local government departments in Bhisho, said provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo.

This meeting follows the death of a boy in Mzimvubu this week.

He was the 15th boy to die as a result of a botched circumcision this season. [Apart from his death, how was his circumcision different from one that wasn't "botched"?]

In June, a total of 49 boys died while undergoing initiation in the mountains.

"The national department of health is expected to present a plan to the province and then there will be discussions that will seek to bring an end to the problem," Kupelo said.

REGGIO EMILIA - Un bambino di tre mesi è stato ricoverato d'urgenza all'ospedale Santa Maria Nuova di Reggio Emilia per un'emorragia dopo essere stato sottoposto a circoncisione. I genitori, originari del Ghana, sono indagati per lesioni gravissime assieme ad un medico. I medici del pronto soccorso si sono trovati di fronte a un'asportazione profonda, attuata nel modo prescritto dalle regole di alcune comunità del Ghana. Il bimbo, per cui i medici hanno stilato una prognosi di venti giorni, è stato dimesso dopo un breve ricovero. La vicenda (rivelata da il Resto del Carlino) risale a poco meno di un mese fa.

L'inchiesta è coordinata dal sostituto procuratore Maria Rita Pantani. La procura sta cercando di verificare chi sia in realtà il medico che, stando a quanto avrebbero dichiarato i genitori, sarebbe stato fatto venire apposta dal Ghana per effettuare l'intervento. Il secondo punto da chiarire è con quali strumenti sia stata compiuta la circoncisione e se si siano seguite tutte le norme igienico-sanitarie.

Il numero di giovani ragazzi che muoiono ogni nelle scuole di iniziazione alla circoncisione è scioccante. Il bilancio delle vittime, all’11 luglio di quest’anno è stato di 42 morti, in sole tre settimane.

Il Sud Africa è da oltre 18 anni una delle più grandi democrazie dell’Africa Subsahariana, ma la vergogna dei ragazzi che muoiono a Eastern Cape ogni anno nelle scuole di iniziazione alla vita adulta non accenna proprio a diminuire.

Why do we, as a caring, compassionate, democratic society, look the other way? Why do we allow certain cultural practices to rob young people of their future?

We are reminded of the work of gender activist and author Dr Gary Barker, whose comments in his book Dying to be Men describes the debilitating association of notions of manhood, issues of violence - that some young people will die for in their quest to become so-called "proper" or "real" men.

What it means to be a "proper" man and the fact that it has been reduced to the practice of circumcision is detrimental not only to the young men who go through the process but to society as a whole.

A society where manhood is ascribed only to individuals who have gone to initiation school is one that does not value men as whole beings with other aspects to their humanity. However, this does not affirm the notion that you can still be a man without being subjected to inhumane treatment.

Too often, not enough attention is paid when people's rights are trampled on with impunity. What message does the silence send to these young men who are expected to go through this route without any guarantee that they will come back alive?

It is our view that any other traditional law is subjected to our supreme law, the Constitution.

There are those who would argue that constitutional protection of culture gives them carte blanche to engage in practices that are not only harmful but may, in fact, lead to death. This is not so. Cultural and religious practices are protected to the extent that they are consistent with other rights in the Constitution (sections 15(3)(b) and 31(2)).

We are concerned that there is not a universal outcry from all of us to these statistics.

We wonder if this silence is a result of us fearing to be labelled as "Eurocentric" or "sell-outs" out there to please the white master.

[color=black]The Children's Act prohibits the circumcision of young men and joins a number of other provincial [A]cts that regulate male circumcision in Free State, Limpopo and Eastern Cape.

Parents themselves are under an obligation to consent to the circumcision before it occurs.

There is a need for active citizenry in if we are to stop practices that not only harm but endanger people's lives.

We must hold our government to account and using the law to do so is our constitutional mandate. Doing otherwise would be betraying those who died for us to have those freedoms.

L’herpes è stato passato ai bambini durante il rituale ortodosso del metzitzah b'peh, in cui il circoncisore, un adulto, pone la sua bocca direttamente sulla ferita creata dalla rimozione del prepuzio del bambino e ne succhia il sangue.

I funzionari della sanità della città di New York propongono ora di limitare il rituale ortodosso.

Un neonato di appena 28 giorni di vita del Queen's Park ha perso in seguito alla circoncisione tre quarti del suo volume totale di sangue morendo nel giro di poche ore dall‘intervento.

Westminster Coroner’s Court heard it eventually stopped and his mother Maame Abrafi, who lives in Ashmore Road, thought he was fine.

L’operazione di circoncisione di Angelo Ofori-Mintah sembrava procedere per il meglio, ma a solo poche ore dopo l'incisione il neonato ha cominciato a sanguinare. Il neonato ha iniziato a piangere in maniera insistente, mentre il suo corpo diventava freddo e pallido ed è stato ricoverato con urgenza in ospedale. E’ sopragiunto un arresto cardiaco in seguito alla forte perdita di sangue ed è morto nelle prime ore di giovedì.

Tests revealed he had lost about three-quarters of his total blood volume and died as a result of an acute haemorrhage due to circumcision. (ed è morto a causa di una emorragia acuta dovuta alla circoncisione.)

The inquest heard Mrs Abrafi had received clear aftercare instructions from Rabbi Mordehai Cohen, who carried out the procedure.The qualified practitioner gave her a printed guide which included his contact details in case of emergency.

He also explained that she was to leave the bandage on for 24 hours ‘at all costs’. But realising her 28-day-old son was bleeding, the court heard, Mrs Abrafi who is originally from Ghana, removed it within nine hours. She was unable to call the Rabbi because she did not have enough phone credit so texted a friend who contacted him for her. The friend said the Rabbi had suggested applying petroleum jelly but as she hadn’t seen the baby she was relying on Mrs Abrafi’s description.

This created a ‘tragic break-down in communication’ said Deputy Coroner Shirley Radcliffe, which left Rabbi Cohen unaware of the full circumstances.
Rabbi Cohen was entirely blameless for the tragedy. Directing her comments to Mrs Abrafi, Mrs Radcliffe said: “This is simply a tragic accident, an unforeseen consequence of the surgical procedure that this baby undertook.

Grace Adeleye (66), of Sarnia Court, Salford, appeared in the dock for the first time at Oldham Magistrates Court on Friday, charged with the manslaughter of Goodluck Caubergs by gross negligence.

Inoltre gli uomini circoncisi hanno il 60% in più probabilità di sviluppare l'alessitimia, che è l'incapacità di sentire o comprendere le emozioni.

NEW YORK – Morire per una circoncisione: è quello che è successo ad un piccolo di due settimane di Brooklyn, New York, lo scorso settembre. Secondo quanto scrive il New York daily News il neonato sarebbe morto al Maimonides Hospital per aver contratto l’herpes dopo l’operazione di circoncisione.

Più esattamente si sarebbe trattato di un virus dell’herpers simplex di tipo 1. Ancora oggi, scrive il quotidiano di New York, non si sa chi abbia eseguito la circoncisione.

Nel 2004 gli operatori sanitari della città avevano rivelato che un altro bambino era morto per una circoncisione effettuata dal rabbino della contea di Rockland. In quel caso, infatti, seguendo il rito ultraortodosso il rabbino aveva cercato di fermare il sangue dalla ferita del piccolo con la propria bocca. Una pratica poco igienica, con possibili conseguenze nocive.

Già in quell’anno si verificarono tre casi di neonati colpiti da herpes contratto in seguito ad una circoncisione.

Il dolore sommerso dei residenti nel Comune di Kasese, in Uganda, quando un bambino di tre settimane di età è morto dopo aver subito la circoncisione in Ospedale. La madre del bambino Dorah Muhindo, ha detto che aveva incaricato il personale sanitario a St. Paul Health Centre, che le avevano consigliato di non allattare il bambino dalle 6 del mattino in quanto l'operazione doveva essere fatta alle 7, ma ha invece avuto luogo alle 11. Un parente, che ha preferito l'anonimato, ha detto che il bambino è stato dimesso alle 05:00.

I genitori ha detto che il bambino è stato dimesso prima che lui ha ripreso conoscenza, e le sue condizioni hanno iniziato a peggiorare quando hanno raggiunto a casa. Il bambino è stato riportato in ospedale ma era troppo tardi per salvargli la vita. I sanitari hanno cercato di accusare la madre della morte del figlio. Ora indaga la polizia sull’accaduto.

I residenti hanno promesso di portare la questione in tribunale se la famiglia lascia cadere il problema.

Kasese - Grief engulfed residents of Kasese Municipality when a three-weeks old baby died after undergoing circumcision. The baby’s mother Dorah Muhindo, said she was instructed by the health workers at St. Paul’s Health Centre IV not to feed the baby from 6am since the operation was to be done at 7am but it took place at 11am.

A relative, who preferred anonymity, said the child was discharged at 5pm. A medical source at the health centre said: “Imagine a three-week-old child spent more than eight hours without eating and no fluids were given to him, obviously his glucose levels reduced causing dehydration and eventually death.”

The parents said the child was discharged before he regained consciousness but his condition worsened when they reached home. The baby was taken back to the hospital but it was too late to save his life. However, health workers accused the mother of having breast-fed him before the recommended time.

A death certificate from the health unit reads: “The child died because of being breast-fed before he gained consciousness.” Locals wondered how a child would be discharged by a medical worker before gaining consciousness.

Residents have vowed to take the matter to court if the family drops the issue.

Within four months, four children have died at St. Paul’s Health Centre IV and Bishop Masereka Health Centre, after circumcision.

Eastern CapeXhosa King Mpendulo Zwelonke Sigcawu has appealed to traditional leaders to work together with their respective municipal councillors in a bid to curb the “unnecessary” deaths of initiates during the December holidays.

The king said it was the duty of traditional leaders to show leadership when there was something amiss in their territories.

“To me it is not a good thing to read about the deaths of initiates, hence I am saying that traditional leaders must show their leadership in this important custom of our forefathers,” said Sigcawu.

Two initiates were reported dead in Matatiele and Bizana earlier this month.

The latest umkhwetha (initiate) to die was from Holela village, Centane, last Thursday.

Police spokesperson Capt Jackson Manatha said: “It is alleged that the deceased was from a nearby village.

“Elderly men observed that he was ill and weak. A car was organised to take him to Butterworth hospital but he died on the way. An inquest docket has been opened.”

Sigcawu urged traditional leaders, as custodians of tribal customs, to be at the forefront of stopping the death of initiates.

The provincial government earlier this year set aside R14.3m for efforts to stop the death of initiates.

A total of 25 initiates in the province died in June from genital amputations while 21 died in December last year.

MEC for local government and traditional affairs Mlibo Qoboshiyane in July said: “It was shocking to learn of the increasing commercialisation of traditional circumcision in some communities, with one ingcibi (traditional surgeon) charging R1600 to circumcise one boy.

“In this case, he had at least 61 initiates in his schools,” said Qoboshiyane.

It's been a while... There's so much I want to write about... There is so much I want to say... I've just been busy with life... work... family... I've been just so overwhelmed...

But I thought this warranted a post.

Often, when circumcision is promoted in this country, the so-called "benefits" of his non-therapeutic surgery are terribly exaggerated, while the risks are completely downplayed, if mentioned at all.

The only ones most parents in this country will hear about, if physicians even bother mentioning them are "pain and discomfort." Few will mention that circumcision could result in MRSA infection, a botched circumcision requiring future correction, partial or full ablation, and even death.

Yes, death is a risk or "complication" of circumcision, but it is rarely mentioned, if at all.

This is what is known and recognized by medical organizations in this country as "informed consent."

An estimated 117 deaths occur every year in the United States due to circumcision. This is a rough estimate, and more conservative than its predecessors (in the past, estimates have been as high as 200 or more deaths per year).

It is hard to get an accurate estimate on the number of deaths in the United States, because deaths due to circumcision are rarely reported as such, if reported at all. At 1.3 million circumcisions a year, circumcision is a money-maker for American medicine, and doctors have an investment to protect. Reporting adverse circumcision effects puts the yearly stipend in jeopardy, not to mention the disrepute it would bring to American medicine. 

Doctors have reputations to uphold, and pocketbooks to line and protect from lawsuits. With so much to lose, there is incentive to hide the evidence. And, parents who would like to maintain their illusion of circumcision being "harmless," and perish the thought that they were actively involved in any way in the death of their son, often agree to keep the death "secret," or report it as the doctor says.

Deaths due to circumcision are often reported as caused by something else, such as "cardiac arrest," or "septic shock." Reporting secondary causes of death hides the fact that they were caused by the circumcision that preceded them. Additionally, hospitals are not required to report deaths caused by circumcision.

Reporting deaths from circumcision would open the floodgates to lawsuits by angry parents and angry men. Reporting deaths from circumcision means loss of revenue. Reporting deaths from circumcision means the "benefits" have to be reconsidered. Reporting deaths from circumcision means that American medical organizations are being irresponsible. Reporting deaths from circumcision means "culture and tradition" is put in danger.

For these reasons, we will never know for sure how many children die as a result of their circumcisions. Reputations to protect, culture and tradition to safeguard, and floodgates to keep sealed.

Meanwhile, boys continue to die.


Connor James was born on Thanksgiving Weekend, Friday, November 25th in Pittsburgh, PA. On Saturday, November 26th, Baby Connor bled to death following his circumcision. Circumcision claims yet another life.

Last year, Joshua Haskins suffered a similar death. After struggling to survive in a NICU with a congenital heart problem, doctors thought it gracious to pressure his mother to have him circumcised "now that he's strong and healthy." Doctors, and even Josh's mother herself insist that Joshua died because of his heart problem (which wasn't aggravated by his circumcision?), although her blog records, which were saved before they were taken down, relate clearly that Joshua had been bleeding uncontrollably, and that it wasn't until 7 hours that doctors caught the nicked vein and decided to stitch it up. By then it was too late.

Would Joshua Haskins still be alive today, had they found the vein in the nick of time?

Who knows.

One thing is for sure though; Joshua was healthy and strong before his circumcision, which unquestionably did cause the complication. Joshua Haskins didn't have to die.

Neither did Connor James.

Neither did countless others before him that we will most likely never know about. 

Circumcision KILLS, people.

Death is one of the "risks" of this procedure.

Considering that there is no medical or clinical necessity to circumcise a perfectly healthy child, is it really worth it?

Without medical or clinical indication, can doctors even be performing risky surgery on a healthy, non-consenting individual, let alone elicit any kind of a "decision" from parents? 

A week from today, Bay Area Intactivists, an intactivist group in San Francisco, will hold a candlelight vigil in remembrance of all male, female and intersex children who have lost their lives due to unnecessary genital surgery.

Rest in peace, Joshua Haskins.

Rest in peace, Connor James.

Rest in peace, Amitai Moshe.

Rest in peace, all of you who died before your time due to this human tragedy.

Le mamme vogliono sempre il meglio per i propri figli, ma quando questo diventa un’ossessione non è di certo una cosa buona per i bimbi, che crescono in maniera veramente non sana.

L’agenzia americana Associated Press dà infatti notizia di una mamma di Portland in Oregon ha provato ad eseguire una circoncisione da sola, verso il figlioletto di tre mesi, usando un taglierino e una pinza da elettricista. La signora Keemonta Peterson, di 29 anni ha spiegato alla polizia che era suo dovere eseguire la circoncisione perchè lo aveva letto sulla Bibbia.

Su YouTube ha eseguito la procedura, ma ha generato un’emorragia al bimbo che è stato fortunatamente portato subito in ospedale dove è stato curato.

La pratica della circoncisione è infatti molto pericolosa se non eseguita da specialisti. Come ogni operazione chirurgica ha i suoi rischi e non si può improvvisare, perchè c’è sempre bisogno degli strumenti necessari per superare i problemi che si possono generare durante l’intervento.
Naturalmente volere il bene dei figli è una cosa positiva, ma è sempre meglio non scambiare quello che vorremo noi con quello che è meglio per i nostri bambini, perchè molto spesso le cose non coincidono, anzi rischiamo di creare danni alle persone che amiamo facendogli del male.

Sempre meglio ragionare e riflettere prima di agire, perchè se poi il danno è irreparabile rimpiangeremo per sempre la nostra azione malsana.

A 30-year-old Portland woman who botched a home circumcision of her 3-month-old son was sentenced today to five years of probation.

Una donna di 30 anni di Portland che ha circonciso in casa il proprio figlio è stato condannata oggi a cinque anni di libertà vigilata.

Keemonta Peterson pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mistreatment. She also must undergo mental health treatment and work with a mental health probation officer as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. The other two charges of abuse were dismissed.

Keemonta Peterson è stata dichiarata colpevole di maltrattamento criminale e negligenza di primo grado . Inoltre dovrà essere sottoposta a un trattamento psichiatrico e lavorare con un ufficiale di salute mentale come parte di un patteggiamento con i procuratori.

Peterson was arrested in April after a lengthy investigation into the October 2010 incident. Peterson, inspired after reading the Old Testament, decided she wanted her son to be circumcised.



La Peterson è stato arrestata in aprile dopo una lunga indagine sull'incidente avvenuto in ottobre 2010. La Peterson, ispirata dopo aver letto l'Antico Testamento, ha deciso che voleva circoncidere il figlio. Non trovando disponibilità nei medici, ha deciso di fare tutto da sola, in casa, con un taglierino e un laccio emostatico, dopo aver visto i video di YouTube. Ha chiamato il 911 dopo il fallimento della circoncisione che ha lasciato suo figlio sanguinante e con un gran dolore al pene.

But because she believed he was too old to be circumcised by doctors, she decided to do it herself, after watching YouTube videos. She called 911 after the botched circumcision left her son bleeding uncontrollably and in great pain.

Doctors completed the circumcision and the boy has fully recovered, said Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney John Casalino. The boy and his three siblings are in the state's care, although Peterson can see them under supervision.

The day after going home with their child the parents performed a circimcision at home which they state was in concordence with their religious beliefs.
The following day the child is noticed having difficulties breathing whilst in its pram being pushed by the parents. They flag down a passing police car who rushes the child to hospital. It died the following day. Post mortem states that the child died as a direct consequence of shock of the cutting of its foreskin which caused  the childs system to over produce over production of andrenalin and other internal chemical reactions which led to its death. The parents have been charged with manslaughter and are currently applying for bail pending the trail. Truly sad but I worry that there are so many fucked up stories regarding the horror emenating from the living ,practising mythologist community that there is the risk of becoming immune. WHich is why I took the time to post this.Lest I get to the point of  just sighing and raising eyebrows.

Two die at circumcision schools

Initial reports on the traditional circumcision schools in Limpopo this year indicate that the ritual is not 100% successful, as was the case last year.

Yesterday Chief Vusani Netshimbupfe, chairperson of the Limpopo Initiation School Task Team, told The New Age that 306 initiation schools were based in the province this winter although the final report was not yet available.

“Reports from districts such as Waterburg and Sekhukhune are still outstanding and we hope to get them this week. Two initiates died separately in Ga-Mashishi Village in Sekhukhune and one in Nwametoa in Mopani respectively. We have not received postmortem reports on the cause of deaths as yet. One initiation camp was closed down after we set police on it because operators were using fake documents. We transferred the affected initiates to another school,” said Netshimbupfe.

He said although most of the initiation schools were for males, there were a few for females. “We will be able to give you more details in terms of gender and the exact number of initiates once we have rubber stamped the official report on initiation schools for this year,” he said.
